Computer Problems!!!

I'm having some real problems with my computer. I have missing php and also 404. If you're a geek you might know what that means, but I think I'll have to take it in for repair. It started as a javascript problem and has crept through my system destroying (I think) Html. A virus?

Yet, I can still access Blogger and write here!

Just wanted to leave a note in case I lose that ability too...........meanwhile I'll keep working on it as best I can...

Go to Start, then Help and click on System Restore and choose a date when you know the computer was working OK. It will put everything back like it is supposed to be.

Look for System Restore and use that. My best advice. I even had to do it last week. And so did my wife.

Oh, and unplug your internet connection when you are actually restoring the computer. That will make sure the same (if it would be a virus) would not have access to your restore code.

Thanks, Abe! I did try restore yesterday, but remained plugged in to the internet. I'll let you know if it works!

OMG! I hope you didnt' catch your computer virus from my computer. I wonder if we can give viruses through our blog comments? I started working on mine Tuesday and still don't have it cleared out. I can access the computer but it keeps filling up everytime I'm online. Good luck to you!

Yeah, I hope Grannie isn't being promiscuous and spreading a virus. I've heard rumors you know.
Anyway, thanks for the visit and kind words.

Good luck with the restore command. I've never tried it but I shall make a note of Abe's advice just in case I ever get the same problem. I'm a technopeasant when it comes to troubleshooting and diagnosing computer difficulties.

Thanks for stopping by Cliff! We'll have to keep an eye on that Granny Annie!

Hi -- is the restore starting to do its good work or is it time for the computer doc? Puleez don't stay off line too long -- I can hardly wait for those postcards!

I hope nothing goes wrong with my computer. I don't know anything about them. I would really miss it if it had to go in for repairs.

Info to know:
- How do you access blogger? Through their website or through an external viewer/writer?

- When you get a 404 error, what is the web address up in your bar? Does it show the address you typed in, or is it something different?

- What antivirus/antispyware programs are you running?

- Does it say 'missing php' or 'missing php.ini'?

I've had things like this happen before where an outdated virus got installed that attempts to redirect all traffic to sites that no longer exist, leading to lots of "404 page not found" errors whenever you try to go anywhere.

If you do believe it to be malware/virus related the first thing I would recommend is to use a program called ComboFix (<-- that site has instructions for download and use of the program)

From there I would download Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, install it, run an update, and run a full system scan.

These two items will get you to a state where you should be able to both update and scan with your anti-virus program. Do a full scan with that as well.

These items are my usual go-to's for getting a machine rid of spyware/malware/viruses, but are not necessarily the end-all be-all, unfortunately.

A few notes:
-System Restore sometimes backfires on you, in that viruses back themselves up to your restore folders so that if you delete them they are able to reinstall themselves from that backup copy. Turning off system restore while performing virus removal is generally recommended, but this also removes a layer of your own protection if one of the virus removers mucks up. A bit of a catch-22.

- System Restore will generally only change system settings and installation information. It does not delete files, so even if it does work you should still run a full system scan to verify that all threats are gone.

- There is of course a possibility that it is not malware related, and that windows files got damaged.

Good luck to your new president.... and may the people (and the media!) employ caution, understanding and patience cos the current mess will take more than a few weeks to clear up!
Hooray for Mr Obama.
And hooray for all the people who voted for him.

GJ, I know! And thanks for your help on this:)

Marla, I'm hoping I won't have to go too long without it:)

Tombo, Thank you so much for your advice! As you may know, despite my name change..I am still of little brain. I am going to start at the begining and work through your comments to see what I can do!

Sham, thanks for your good wishes as our coountry begins it's journey under a new Commander in Chief. He is sailing under the worst of conditions, and we all hope and pray he can chart us safely through these troubled waters.

Linda, Linda, Linda, where are you? How are you? How is your computer? I'm still fighting spyware every single day. It is my plan to reinstall all my systems next week when I get a laptop to use in the meantime. I sure hope you are making progress because I seem to be taking two steps forward and three steps back!!
