A Peacock Pays a Visit

Eeyore has built a new bird feeder that has been attracting a variety of birds we don't usually see at our feeders as well as our usual variety. I've been keeping an eye on it, and trying to find time to lurk inside the open window for a photo op. Yesterday, I glanced out and was thrilled to see this bird of a very different feather indeed, wandering about the yard.

A camera shy fellow, he hung about for awhile investigating various aspects of the old place before wandering off.

I've heard peacocks calling in the neighborhood and he wandered off in the same general direction as the sound seems to originate, so I hope he found his way back home. I don't know anything about peafowl, but his tail looks short to me, so I think he may be a young male.
He was a colorful surprise on a quiet autumn day.

What a magical place your yard must be! We get passing song birds but nothing nearly as exotic as a peacock! The One Acre Wood is the perfect name for it.

Oh I bet you were delighted to see that fellow. He would have been a colorful part of the day. I am too young to remember the ads in the post below but I really enjoy seeing the artwork, thanks for sharing.

Olivia, you did it again! A perfect peacock haiku,,

Thanks Mary Beth, it's an old place in an old neighborhood with change going on all around...

Joni, those ads really date me, although I think the witch-hazel might be Victorian and even before my time!

My last (married) name is "Pavek." It is the Czech word for "little peacock." They are such beautiful, exotic birds.

You lucky thing. All we get to see are eagles, ravens, and magpies (crows in tuxedos). Well, the usual boreal songbirds, of course, but few odd or exotic species. Your yard sounds wonderful.

A neighbour at the back of us has peacocks roaming his land, they often find their way into our garden, which I love...but they scare the pants off our dog, Wolfie!

Thank you for the comments on my writing. I am in the middle of writing a full-length horror/fantasy novel and will be approaching publishers in the New Year.
Fingers crossed on that one!

What a lovely sight to see in your garden, peacocks are such fabulous colours, I love seeing them though it doesn't often happen as they are mostly in the grounds of stately homes in UK. A hotel I stayed in in South Africa had them wandering about the grounds though and it was great seeing them on a daily basis especially if the males were displaying. They make an appalling racket though:)

Beautiful birds, but they have a strange 'cry', don't you think?

OSD, little peacock..that's such a fun name! This is the first and probably the last exotic bird to wander in, but it was fun..

Akasha, lucky you to have peacocks coming into your yard on a regular basis, but poor Wolfie!
Good Luck on your novel!!!!

Rowan,it must have been lovely staying in Africa with peacocks and other exotic creatures..
The cries in our neighborhood come from a couple of blocks away and seem to be muffled by the trees. Although I've heard them for years, this is the first one I've seen.

herhimnbryn, the cry is strange, almost more cat than bird like..

How interesting! I peacock in your yard. I don't see them in the wild out in my parts of the world. When I take my kids to the petting farm, we do see them there and they're so pretty.
